This year we want to highlight our community’s resiliency as we explore ways to cope with the global crisis we are facing. It is no secret that when facing a global crisis, the most vulnerable social groups are the first to suffer the negative impact of these occurrences. And the black community is no exception. In addition to the economic and health consequences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our people continue to have to fight for their lives in a system that was not designed to take care of them.
I Afro-Costa Rican Visual Arts Gathering (EAAV)
The Encuentro Afrocostarricense de Artes Visuales is a call to acknowledge the underrepresentation of the afro community in the visual arts scene. It encourages the exploration of the richness, diversity, as well as the afro experience in Costa Rica in order to understand the need to open spaces for the afro community both inside and outside the art world.
